WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) on Friday published an opinion piece in Fox News entitled: “Trump is leading us into another unnecessary war. This time it’s Cuba.” In his op-ed, Senator Welch highlights that President Trump is dragging the United States into another reckless war—first with Iran, and now with Cuba. The Senator also underscores how an attack by the U.S. would pose real risks for American troops and the Cuban people and outlines key elements of what a peace deal with Cuba should include. 

Senator Welch has been outspoken in his strong opposition to the use of military force against Cuba, as he has been against President Trump’s illegal war with Iran. Earlier this month, the Senator delivered remarks from the Senate floor urging President Trump to change course on Cuba. The Senator has supported a War Powers Resolution to block the deployment of U.S. Armed Forces in hostilities against Cuba and spoke from the Senate floor to condemn Cuba’s leadership for persecuting political dissidents and the island’s failed centralized economy

Rather than causing more suffering and chaos in Cuba and triggering another refugee crisis 90 miles from Florida, President Trump should seek to make history through effective deal-making, not by a violent ‘takeover’ financed by American taxpayers.”
