Welch Statement on Meeting Between President Trump and Prime Minister Carney

May 6, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, met at the White House. U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) released the following statement:

“President Trump refuses to acknowledge the economic partnership of America and Canada. Trump’s tariffs on Canadian imports—machinery, lumber, energy, and more—are raising costs for Vermont’s businesses, farmers, and families. By insulting our northern neighbors when we should be welcoming them with open arms, Trump’s trade war is hurting our tourism, food, and outdoor economies. Instead of advancing an agenda that lowers prices and secures our international alliances, the president is dug in on an irresponsible trade war and crude rhetoric. This is not how America should treat our neighbors and friends—Trump’s behavior is not representative of Vermont.”
