WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) today released the following statement on President Trump’s threats to take military action in Iran:
“President Trump has amassed military assets for what appears to be an imminent military action against Iran. This would be reckless, dangerous and would spell the end of diplomatic efforts in this fragile region. He has stated conflicting objectives, has been silent on the duration, failed to define a clear justification, and has not explained what would constitute a ‘successful’ outcome. He is threatening to put the safety of our troops at risk and could spark a rapid escalation of conflict in the Middle East. The American people are entitled to forthright clarity from President Trump before our servicemembers are put in harm’s way,” said Senator Welch. “I adamantly oppose a unilateral decision by President Trump to authorize an attack without debate and authorization by the U.S. Congress, as required by the Constitution.”
