WASHINGTON, D.C. – In remarks from the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) urged the United States to remain steadfast in its support of the Ukrainian people’s brave defense against Putin’s unjust invasion. Senator Welch emphasized the importance of renewing Congress’ bipartisan commitment to ensuring that Ukraine has what it needs to resist Russian aggression and defending a world where borders cannot be changed by force.
“The question before this United States Senate, right now, is not whether Ukraine is going to hang in there and fight—they’ve proved again and again that they will hang in and fight. If Ukraine won’t falter in that fight, the U.S. must also persevere,” said Senator Welch.
“I believe we must renew our commitment to the Ukrainian people. I believe we must stay the course. This year, we’re celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, when the United States advanced a foreign policy principle that borders cannot be changed by force….We have an opportunity today to stand up and protect that legacy for this century by recommitting to the Ukrainian people that we will stand in support of that principle, in support of their freedom, and in support of our security.”

In March, Senate Republicans rejected a resolution offered by Senator Welch reaffirming the United States’ support for the principle that no country can take another by force or threat of force. In his remarks on the resolution, Senator Welch reaffirmed support for the people of Ukraine as they defend their country against Russia’s violent invasion.
On the third anniversary of the Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Senator Welch joined Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and his colleagues in introducing the Protecting our Guests During Hostilities in Ukraine Act, legislation that would provide temporary guest status to Ukrainians and their immediate family members who are already in the United States through the “Uniting for Ukraine” parole process. The bill allows Ukrainians to stay and work in the U.S. until the Secretary of State determines that hostilities in Ukraine have ceased, and it is safe for them to return.
