Welch Supports Iran War Powers Resolution, Shares Video Urging Congress to Stop Trump’s Reckless War

Mar 4, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) today voted in favor of a bipartisan War Powers Resolution, led by Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), which would have stopped President Trump’s unconstitutional use of U.S. Armed Forces in hostilities in Iran. Senate Republicans blocked the measure.

The Senator shared a video voicing his concerns about how the President’s war of choice—the biggest war in the Middle East in a generation—will endanger American troops, kill thousands of innocent civilians, and jeopardize our national security.

“I just came from the floor where I voted in favor of the War Powers Resolution that would require the president to come to Congress before committing our men and women in uniform to yet another war in the Middle East. This unilateral decision that the president made puts our troops in danger. It puts our country’s national security in danger.

“This is yet another war in the Middle East—the one kind of war that President Trump said he would not start, that he wanted to end. But we’re doing the same thing: Iraq, bad leadership. Saddam Hussein. Afghanistan, the Taliban—terrible leadership. Now Iran, terrible leadership with the Ayatollah.

“So, it’s easy to criticize the leadership; see them as a threat—and they are. And it’s easy to make the decision to go to war, but we saw with Iraq and Afghanistan, very hard to end it. This decision by the president, I oppose. His way of doing it, I strongly oppose.

“I am going to keep speaking out, doing everything I can for the well-being of our troops, but also standing up for Vermont, where we know that these forever wars have to end.”

Senator Welch has been an outspoken voice in raising concerns about President Trump’s use of the United States military to attack Iran and pull the U.S. into another war in the Middle East. Earlier this week, Senator Welch condemned Trump’s reckless attack on Iran from the Senate floor. The Senator has expressed grave concern about President Trump’s unilateral decision to go to war with Iran and raised the alarm about how this conflict will put American servicemembers in extreme danger.

Last month, Senators Welch and Kaine led ten Senate Democrats in urging Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio to immediately end the Trump Administration’s deportation flights to Iran.
