Welch Statement on Trump-Pfizer Deal

Sep 30, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Trump Administration announced that Pfizer has agreed to sell select prescription medications directly to patients at a discount on a new direct purchasing platform, TrumpRx.gov, and in exchange, Pfizer will receive a three-year grace period on President Trump’s proposed 100% pharmaceutical tariffs. The White House announcement also indicated Pfizer would provide most-favored-nation pricing to state Medicaid programs. U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, released the following statement:

“Americans deserve the best possible price for prescription medications—I agree with President Trump on that. But today’s announced deal is not the answer. Patients shouldn’t need to rely on drug companies to lower prices when Big Pharma thinks they can get a good deal out of it. President Trump should focus on lowering drug prices for all patients, not just those who can afford to pay cash up front for their drugs on a platform he’s named after himself.

“We need systemic, durable drug pricing reform that builds on the progress we’ve made to make affordable medications a reality for all Americans.”
