Welch Statement Applauding Vice President Harris’ Actions to Support Arévalo Government and Rebuild U.S.-Guatemala Cooperation

Apr 2, 2024

BURLINGTON, VT – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) today released the following statement applauding U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent actions to support Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo’s administration and rebuild cooperation between the United States and Guatemala:

“The United States and Guatemala have a troubled history dating back many generations, deeply rooted in the corruption, poverty, and injustice that has driven hundreds of thousands to seek safety and a better life in America. The inauguration of anti-corruption candidate President Bernardo Arévalo in January is the best chance our two countries have had to work as genuine partners for the good of the people. In my meetings with President Arévalo in Washington and Guatemala I was struck by his integrity, his commitment to diplomacy, and his positive vision for his country.

“I’m encouraged by initiatives announced by Vice President Harris to support the Arévalo government and spur private investment. I was especially gratified to hear her mention the Central America Service Corps, which my predecessor Senator Leahy was instrumental in providing the authority and funding for and which I have continued to support. This program will enable Guatemalan youth to learn skills, benefit their communities, and earn income. There is no better way to tackle Guatemala’s problems than by investing in the next generation.”
