Welch Rallies with Families of Fired Federal Employees, Vows to Fight Back Against Trump’s Illegal Rampage

Jul 29, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) joined children and families of fired federal employees on Capitol Hill to demand that the Administration immediately rehire federal workers illegally terminated from their jobs. Senator Welch spoke with around 70 former federal workers and their children and vowed to fight back against President Trump’s attacks on federal agencies. At the event, children of federal workers wrote letters to Senators, which were hand-delivered to offices.

“These kids and their parents are standing up against a bully who is working every day to dismantle the government. I am so thankful they’re here and writing to their Senators with a clear message: this attack on the federal government hurts so many people and families across America. Republicans need to stand with us and say enough is enough. Congress must fight back to protect our system of checks and balances so vital to our democracy,” said Senator Welch

Senator Welch has been a leading voice in pushing back against the Trump Administration’s unlawful efforts to dismantle vital programs and terminate billions of dollars in life-saving aid. Following the so-called Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) unlawful firings of over 5,500 USAID employees, Senator Welch demanded answers from the State Department on DOGE’s actions that directly violate funds appropriated by Congress through the Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) Department of State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Act.
