WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) today released the following statement condemning Russia’s brutal aerial bombardment of Ukrainian civilians in recent weeks:
“Russia’s ruthless aerial bombardment on Kyiv can only be described as a full-blown campaign of terror. On Putin’s orders, Russian soldiers knowingly conducted thousands of drone and missile strikes directly targeting civilian homes for the sole purpose of striking terror into the heart of innocent Ukrainians. Not since the Blitz of London in 1940 has a European capital faced such a ruthless campaign of terror directed explicitly at civilians. This is the textbook definition of terrorism—plain and simple.
“The timing of Putin’s brutal bombing campaign—just weeks after attending peace talks in Alaska—cannot be overstated. It’s clear now more than ever that Putin will seek to undermine the United States’ efforts to negotiate an end to the war at every turn. We must ensure that Ukraine has the tools it needs to prevail in the face of evil, just as our British allies did over eighty years ago. President Trump must demand an end to Putin’s tyranny to save innocent lives and secure peace in Ukraine.”
