Senator Welch Joins Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to Survey Damage from Historic Storms and Flooding

Jul 17, 2023

HARDWICK, VT—Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) joined Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Governor Phil Scott, and Congresswoman Becca Balint to survey damage to infrastructure in Hardwick, Vermont, following historic storms and flooding across the state last week. The group assessed damage to the Hardwick Rail Trail Bridge and visited the site of the Inn by the River, a local hotel that was completely destroyed by floodwaters during the storm.

“Vermonters are resilient.  We will make it through this challenge, as we have so many times before. But we can’t do it alone. We need help from the federal government,” said Sen. Welch. “I’m grateful for Secretary Buttigieg’s presence here today, and for the commitment he and the Biden administration have made to assist Vermont’s recovery.”

The July 2023 storm caused profound damage to roads and bridges throughout Vermont, and Department of Transportation programs will provide critical support for Vermonters in the coming weeks and months.
