WASHINGTON, D.C. — On the second anniversary of Hamas’ terror attack on Israel, U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.) filed a Senate Resolution condemning antisemitic hatred.
In his resolution, Senator Welch condemned Hamas for its violent terrorist attacks on Israel and denounced antisemitic attacks and hateful language in America. The resolution also urges elected officials and community leaders to speak out against antisemitism and reaffirms the Senate’s commitment to protecting the rights of all Americans to peacefully assemble and practice their faith without fear of violence.
“We must acknowledge how catastrophic the October 7th attack was to the people of Israel and to the Jewish community around the world. That pain, and the fear caused by these terror attacks, must be acknowledged by every one of us. I urge the Senate to pass this resolution condemning antisemitism and reaffirming Congress’s commitment to protect the right of all Americans to practice their faith in peace and safety,” said Senator Welch.
According to the American Jewish Committee, 77% of American Jews reported feeling less safe as a Jewish person following the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, and 90% of American Jews believe that antisemitism in America has increased since the attack.
The Senator’s resolution denounces threats of violence and prejudice linked to antisemitic hatred in the United States, Israel, and around the world, and states clearly that no individual should be subjected to violence or intimidation because of their religion, heritage, or peaceful advocacy.
Earlier today, Senator Welch released the following statement on the second anniversary of Hamas’ attack on Israel:
“We will never forget the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Almost 1,200 people, including 43 Americans, lost their lives that day and 250 people were taken hostage. It was the most violent attack against the Jewish people since the holocaust. We remember the terror inflicted on Israeli citizens that day and honor the lives and memories of the victims of Hamas’ evil acts—many of whom were children and young people, women, and the elderly. We also remember their families and loved ones, who have endured unimaginable pain since that day. In America and around the world, we must stand against hate and antisemitism today, and always,” said Senator Welch.
“This horrific conflict must end. Hamas must return the remaining hostages, and humanitarian aid must be surged into Gaza. On the solemn anniversary of this tragic day, we should all recommit to peace and justice for all the people of the Middle East.”
