BURLINGTON, VT—U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, returned from Copenhagen, Denmark, where he joined a bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Delegation in reasserting continued respect for the U.S.-Denmark alliance and support for the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark over the territory of Greenland.
While the Delegation was in Denmark, President Trump threatened additional tariffs on certain NATO member nations that sent troops to Greenland. In response, Senator Welch announced he would introduce a new Joint Resolution of Disapproval to block any Greenland-related tariffs on our NATO allies.
“When I was talking to folks from Greenland and Denmark, and they asked me why Trump was doing this, I couldn’t answer. I could say that as a United States Senator, I’m going to work with colleagues to introduce and pass legislation taking away the president’s abuse of the tariff authority to compel our NATO countries to go along…” said Senator Welch in the video. “This is a dead-end confrontation that will only do harm to us, to NATO, and our standing in the world. We stand for self-determination. We stand for sovereignty. And President Trump is challenging that in a way that’s going to be very harmful.”

A Joint Resolution of Disapproval will force a vote in the Senate to prohibit the President’s use of tariffs to punish NATO allies. Senator Welch will file the Joint Resolution of Disapproval when the Senate returns from recess.
In the face of the President’s threats against Denmark, Senator Welch has championed efforts to show Congressional support for the U.S.-Denmark alliance, including leading the Senate’s passage of a bipartisan resolution recognizing the Danish people’s commitment to cooperation with the U.S. and expressing gratitude for the sacrifices of Danish troops alongside Americans in recent conflicts.
Senator Welch is also a leading voice opposing President Trump’s use of tariffs to start trade wars and drive prices up for Americans. The Senator’s bipartisan legislation to repeal President Trump’s global tariffs passed the Senate in October. He is also the sponsor of the CANADA Act, bipartisan legislation that would exempt U.S.-owned small businesses from tariffs imposed on Canada. Senator Welch is a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over trade and tariffs.
