NEBRASKA and IOWA—U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee and Senate Agriculture Committee, will travel to Nebraska and Iowa this week to discuss the Trump Administration’s trade war and attack on rural health care.
On Friday, Senator Welch will visit farms in Madison County, Nebraska, and provide remarks at the Nebraska Farmers Union State Convention. Senator Welch’s remarks will focus on the impact of President Trump’s reckless tariffs on the agriculture economy and the importance of strengthening rural communities. Welch will host a town hall on Friday evening at Creighton University, focused on supporting working families’ access to quality, affordable health care.
On Saturday, Senator Welch will meet with farmers in Ames, Iowa, and provide remarks at the Iowa Farmers Union State Convention.

President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act will cut more than $1 trillion dollars from Medicaid over ten years and will result in billions of lost revenue for rural hospitals. Senator Welch voted in strong opposition against the legislation in July. If Republicans refuse to work with Democrats and extend ACA Premium Tax Credits before December 31, 2025, nearly 27,000 Vermonters, 129,000 Nebraskans, and 120,000 Iowans will lose a vital source to pay for plans provided through the ACA marketplace.
The trade war has been devastating for farmers in Vermont, Nebraska, and Iowa. In the first quarter of 2025, Nebraska and Iowa saw their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) shrink by more than 6 percent each.
Senator Welch’s Committee and Subcommittee Assignments for the 119th Congress include:
- Senate Committee on Finance
- Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry; Ranking Member, Subcommittee on Rural Development, Energy, and Credit
